Suddenly, the burdening feeling disappeared, and the world seemed friendly again. For Steffen it was too easy, a simple finger snap could not be the solution.

“It can’t be that simple. Killing is wrong.”

“It is, but no one is forcing you to do it. Here it’s kill or be killed when in doubt. The decision is still yours. You can decide every time. If in doubt, get yourself killed. You’re skilled at that.”

Before he could reply, the god interrupted him.

“No, this world works like that. And after all, you didn’t have much remorse when you killed the rats, or were they worth less in your eyes?”

Steffen reluctantly agreed with the god.

“Thanks for the help. What do I owe you?”

The god waved it off. He sat down on the steps with cracking knees.

“Nothing. You’re welcome.” The little god looked up at him.

“Sit down. I’ll get a stiff neck if you don’t. Why did you come to me, of all people?”

“The other gods didn’t want to help or get anything in return,” Steffen said and sat down.

“Why not?”

Steffen talked about what had happened to him in the temple. The god looked at him curiously.

“So there, cursed you are. Fact, I almost missed it. How did you manage that?”

The erratic behavior of the god bothered Steffen, nevertheless he continued to talk whilst the god listened eagerly.

“That’s a really exciting story, but I’ve wasted enough time. I wish you good luck for your further journey. You will definitely need it. The curse thing is a tricky one.”

“Can you remove it?”

The old man shook his head.

“No, besides, you can still learn spells.”

“No, I can’t. I’m cursed and I can’t help the princess.”

“Bullshit. You just have to approach it differently. Use your head, kid.”

What the old man said, made no sense to Steffen. He raised his hand in protest and the god interrupted him immediately.

“No. Stop it now. Help me up! I’m tired and I’ve wasted enough time.” Steffen sighed and helped the grumpy old man to his feet.

“Thanks, kid.” He patted Steffen’s cheek and disappeared. Steffen was left speechless, shaking his head at the crazy encounter.
